Sumatra Mandheling ASKOGO, Fair Trade Organic

The ASKOGO (Asosiasi Kopi Gayo Organic) coop was founded in August 2008, and was certified Fair Trade Organic in September of 2009 by FLO (Fair Trade Labelling Organizations). The coop consist of 760 members in 13 different villages located in the regions of Aceh Tengah and Bener Meriah in Western Sumatra. There are 13 collectors and 13 delegates which are elected from the 13 villages. Of these 13 villages, 4 grow Robusta and 9 villages grow premium Arabica coffee like the one being offered here at Mean Cat Coffee.

The coffee is grown at elevations of 1000-1500 meters above sea level. This high elevation is perfect for allowing the coffee to develop slowly to reach its full potential. Although ASKOGO is relatively new and small compared to other coops in the area, it is producing some fantastic coffee, and continues to grow every year. This a double picked coffee, meaning that it goes through 2 stages of hand sorting to remove any defective beans.

This is an excellent Sumatran coffee. It has the typical sumatra earthiness, but it is more subdued than most others I have tried. The acidity is medium-low and the the cup boasts notes of cedar, molasses, gingerbread, dark chocolate, and caramel, with just a hint of fruit when hot. It's a very complex cup with a great thick body. Really shines when brewed in a French Press or the Aeropress.
